Most people only talk about the cold weather months in Minnesota because that’s what we’re known for.
But what they’re forgetting is that the Land of 10,000 Lakes has beautiful, warm summers that should be enjoyed by everyone.
So what are summers like in Minnesota? Are you planning a visit and need to know how to pack?
Let’s go over what you should expect, what not to expect, and how you can enjoy the beautiful summers that we have up north.
What Are Summers Like in Minnesota?
Before we get into the details, I want to give you a quick rundown on what you can expect from the summer months in Minnesota.
Typically, we have nice, warm summers that aren’t too hot and are certainly not too cold.
Temperatures range from 55 degrees F to 100 degrees F, but rarely get that hot.
Some days it’s humid, but that usually goes away pretty quickly and we’re able to again enjoy the beautiful weather.
Rain does happen often, which can be a bummer for those days when you want to get outside, but it’s much needed for the forests and farmers’ crops.
But all in all, summers in Minnesota are beautiful and should definitely be more appreciated than they currently are!
Minnesota Summer Climate
With summer in Minnesota comes warm temperatures. How warm? Let’s take a look at the typical climate for a Minnesota summer.
Temperature
Average temperatures during the summer months usually hover around 70 degrees F.
It can get as cool as 50 degrees, or as warm as 100 degrees, but this doesn’t happen often.
There are usually only 1 or 2 days a year (if that) when the thermostat reaches 100 degrees.
Although there are on average 13 days per year where the Twin Cities sees temperatures in the 90s.
Mornings and nights are typically cooler, sometimes reaching down to 50-60 degrees, but it will usually get warmer in the afternoon.
Because of these warm temperatures, we tend to see the sun pretty often in Minnesota, which is great for getting outside.
The sun is out most days, which makes for great times getting outside and enjoying the beautiful Minnesota nature!

Humidity
Unfortunately, there are some pretty humid and muggy days during summer in Minnesota.
The worst month for humidity is July when we see almost 10 days of pretty gross, uncomfortable weather.
The good news is that with a quick jump in the lake, you can cool down and get rid of that yucky feeling.
Rain
It is common to see rain in Minnesota, especially in June, as this is typically the wettest month.
You might see rain almost half of the days in June, but this is just getting you prepared for those warm, sunny days in July.
When is Summer in Minnesota?
The weather usually starts to warm up in the middle of May, but most people don’t really call it summer until June hits.
This is when school is out of session and you start to see those 70-degree+ days.
Usually, people call the end of July the end of summer, but warm days can still go into later September.
How Long Does a Minnesota Summer Last?
If you were to ask me for my answer to this question, I would just tell you ‘not long enough.’
But in reality, a Minnesota summer usually lasts from mid-May until mid-September.

Many people don’t call those few weeks in May or September summer because school is usually still in session, but they do have some warm weather.
So out of an entire year, Minnesota usually sees summer for about 4 months total.
What is the Hottest Month in Minnesota?
The warmest month in Minnesota is usually July.
During this month, you’ll see an average high of almost 85 degrees.
You can expect to see temperatures reaching into the 90s on some days.
Humidity is also at its highest point in July with almost 10 uncomfortable, muggy days.
Is Minnesota Hot in the Summer?
Short answer, yes, Minnesota can be very hot in the summer months.
Especially in July, which is the hottest month of the year, you’ll want to make sure that you’re shaded and hydrated.
With temperatures reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s pretty often, you’ll likely find yourself wanting to take a dip in the lake every day.
Is it Humid or Dry in Minnesota in Summer?
Minnesota has very humid summers and doesn’t experience dry air until the winter.
You can expect to feel kind of muggy during a few months out of the year because of the humidity content that the northern state sees.
Sometimes, dry heat sounds so much better than that wet, sticky feeling that we always have!

In all honestly, all of the seasons are a great time to visit the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but there is definitely a best time for a visit.

I typically recommend visiting Minnesota in the summer, especially if you don’t like the cold.
Specifically, July and August for the warmest, clearest, driest days.

Summer months provide warm, sunny days that allow you to be outside and really experience all that Minnesota has to offer.
Hiking trails are open, live music is happening, outdoor patios are ready to eat on, the lakes are clear of ice, and it’s beautiful.
Now, if you prefer winter activities like skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling, then winter is your time to shine.
