The Best Resorts and Hotels on the North Shore, MN
If you’re looking for hotels on the North Shore, then these options are going to be the best places for you to check out!
1. Bluefin Bay
⭐ Rating: 9.2/10 | 🧳 Location: Tofte | 🏨 Book It!
My personal favorite place to stay for all seasons on the North Shore is Bluefin Bay in Tofte.
The resort is just minutes from Lutsen Mountain Ski Resort, and just a short drive to hundreds of miles of hiking trails for the summer months.
Just like the other North Shore resorts in this list, you’ll have expansive views of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains, right from your room.
Down by the lake, you’ll find a small fire pit that’s open year-round. You can make s’mores (my favorite thing to do!) or just enjoy listening to the crackle of the fire near the water.
” I told everyone on our hikes where we were staying, because we were so proud of what a great choice we had made.”

Room options at Bluefin Bay include guestrooms and suites, as well as condos and townhomes. Some rooms feature amazing amenities like kitchens, jacuzzis, or fireplaces.
The feature that really stands out to me is Bluefin Bay’s outdoor pool and hot tub. It overlooks the lake and is the best way to relax after a long day of exploring the shore.
During the last time I stayed, I took advantage of their free equipment rentals. I was able to rent snowshoes and go out on the trail. But they also have mountain bikes, ice skates, and more.

⭐ Rating: 8.8/10 | 🧳 Location: Castle Danger | 🏨 Book It!
The Grand Superior Lodge is in a prime location for exploring the North Shore, enjoying family time, and taking in the incredible views of Lake Superior.
It’s located close enough to Duluth that you can spend time in the city, but also has close access to the rest of the North Shore, being just a short drive to Two Harbors.
There are a variety of lodging options like the lodge, hotel-style rooms, cabins, and lake homes. You can choose which size best fits your family, as some are bigger than others.
“Completely enjoyed our last minute weekend stay at Grand Superior Lodge. The view was beautiful – the sound of the waves from Lake Superior lulled me to sleep….”

The stunning views from all of the rooms are a standout feature. Plus, you can walk down onto the resort’s private shoreline to enjoy more of the lake.
I also love that they have a few dog-friendly room options since I hate having to leave my dog, Bella, at home. They’re part of the family after all!
And one of my favorite features is that every night, you can enjoy complimentary s’mores by the lakeside fire pits. Seriously, what could be better?
Thanks to all of these amazing amenities, the Grand Superior Lodge is one of the best places to book lodging on Lake Superior.

3. Cove Point Lodge
⭐ Rating: 9/10 | 🧳 Location: Beaver Bay | 🏨 Book It!
Cove Point Lodge comes in as one of the best lodges on the North Shore, MN, thanks to its central location in Beaver Bay.
Gooseberry Falls, Tettegouche, and Split Rock Lighthouse State Parks are all within 15 minutes, so it’s easy to see the state’s best state parks.
The iconic red lodge sits on the shores of Lake Superior and has a large grassy area to relax on as you watch the waves crash in.
“Rain on vacation can be a bummer, but on the north shore, with these views, warm fireplace, and friendly staff, you can be sure to have a perfect trip no matter what the conditions are outside at Cove Point.”

The main lodge features North Shore hotel-style rooms that give off log cabin vibes. Or, you can opt for one of their 2 or 3-bedroom cottages.
One of the best features of Cove Point Lodge is that every one of its rooms has incredible views of the lake, so you don’t ever have to worry about missing out on views.
In the morning, enjoy a complimentary Scandinavian or continental breakfast, and for dinner, check out Cove Point Crossings, for some of the best boneless wings. I got a specialty wing sauce a few summers ago, and they were the best wings I’ve ever had!
4. Caribou Highlands Lodge
⭐ Rating: 8/10 | 🧳 Location: Lutsen | 🏨 Book It!
While great during all times of the year, Caribou Highlands Lodge is especially fantastic in the winter months since it’s right next to the Lutsen ski resort!
If you love skiing as much as I do, then you’ll love being able to be the first person on the slopes by staying nearby at this North Shore, MN lodging option.
Caribou Highlands offers a variety of historic lodge rooms, townhomes, condos, and log cabins. But it doesn’t matter which you choose, because they all have amazing views.
I also love visiting here in the fall months because the foliage is incredible. Plus you can quickly jump on the Lutsen Gondola, which is just steps from the resort.
“This was a great place for our North Shore visit! Great accommodations. Delicious food in the on site restaurant. Highly recommended”

The lodge also features an indoor and outdoor pool, as well as a variety of equipment rentals that you can enjoy throughout your stay.

I love staying at East Bay Suites because it puts you right in the action for everything that’s going on in Grand Marais!
You’ll be sitting right at the base of the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains, on the shoreline of Lake Superior, and steps away from dozens of delicious restaurants and adorable shops.
Since these are suites, each room features a full kitchen, which is perfect for preparing your own meals during your stay if you want to save money or are staying long-term.
“The location was perfect – right on the water and within walking distance of beaches, restaurants, and stores. The accommodations were very comfortable and the staff was excellent.”

But there are a different variety of suites to choose from. Some have lake views, others have mountain views, and some have balconies, fireplaces, and more.
They also have dog-friendly lodging available, so you’re able to bring your adventure buddy along if you want!
One of the best parts about staying at East Bay Suites is that you can rent snowshoes, telescopes, and other equipment to use during your stay.
My favorite part is that World’s Best Donuts is literally across the street, so every morning, you can go and grab a delicious donut. So. Worth. it.

6. Black Beach Inn by Grandstay
⭐ Rating: 7.7/10 | 🧳 Location: Silver Bay | 🏨 Book It!
If you’re traveling to the North Shore with kids, then a stay at the Black Beach Inn will be perfect for you.
The reason why this is such a great place for kids is that there are 2 great waterslides for them to get their play on while they splash in the pool. One is larger, and the other is perfect for little ones.
And while the kids are playing, you can sit back and relax in the hot tub, which is also found in the pool room.
“Excellent location for hitting the state parks in the area. The location was excellent as we were hiking in that area and didn’t have to travel far. The room was spacious and just what we needed. The check in and out process was quick.”

The lodge is located right in Silver Bay, meaning that it’s just a short drive away from places like Tettegouche and Split Rock Lighthouse State Parks.
It’s also within walking distance of one of my favorite North Shore hidden gems – Black Beach, and just a short drive to the famous Palisade Head.
Aside from the location and the pool room, Black Beach Inn also features a free breakfast every morning and a few pet-friendly rooms.

⭐ Rating: 7.2/10 | 🧳 Location: Two Harbors | 🏨 Book It!
If you’re looking for one of the best resorts on the North Shore, MN, then you’ll definitely want to check out Superior Shores Resort.
The name of the resort fits perfectly, as Superior Shores Resort has over 5,000 feet of private shoreline to explore. Sit back and watch the ships go by, or enjoy the crackling bonfire in the evening.
A few options for lodging are available including the main lodge, suites and guestrooms, and lake homes. Take your pick to best fit your family.
No matter which you choose, you can enjoy amazing lakefront views, which I think we can all admit are the best kind of views!
“The suite room layout and decor were excellent. The on-site fine-dining restaurant “Silver Creek Chophouse” was fantastic with excellent service and a menu that includes some unique items… We also had a nice surprise after dinner finding a bottle of champagne in our room.”.. The beach area is great and walkable.”

One of my favorite parts of Superior Shores Resort is that it has a hot tub that overlooks the lake. After a long day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a hot tub. And when it has a view?! Amazing.
The Silver Creek Chophouse is the resort’s onsite restaurant, which serves upscale food. Last time I visited the shore, I stoppped by and had the North Shore Pot Stickers. They were SO good.
Overall, Superior Shores Resort is ready to serve you with select dog-friendly rooms, delicious food, great views, and a good time.

Best Vacation Rentals on North Shore, MN
Though these North Shore hotels are great, sometimes it’s fun to try out something new, and stay at a vacation rental instead. Here are some of the best ones!
8. Log Home With a View
🛌 Bedrooms: 2 rooms, 4 Beds | 🛁 Bathrooms: 1 | 📍 Location: Beaver Bay
This beautiful log cabin sits right in the middle of the trees and boasts a great view of Lake Superior, right from the front porch.
I love that the entire home is made of log, so it feels exactly like a Northern Minnesota cabin should, and is nice and cozy for any season.
The home is tucked away in the trees, so you don’t have to worry about being bothered by anyone else during your visit since it’s nice and private.
“When we walked in the front door, we immediately felt the warmth of home away from home. Very inviting, all our expectations of a log vacation home were met. The home was meticulous and the view spectacular.”
Kathy — (Read More Reviews)
But if you’re ready to go adventure, you’ll be within a short distance of some of the North Shore’s best attractions such as Lutsen Mountains and Two Harbors.
The home can comfortably sleep up to 6 people, so it’s the perfect place to book for a family getaway or a friend’s gathering.
You can also take advantage of the outdoor firepit, which is nestled in the forest, with amazing views of Lake Superior.
9. Modern Forest Chalet
🛌 Bedrooms: 3 rooms, 5 Beds | 🛁 Bathrooms: 3 | 📍 Location: Lutsen
This incredible wooden forest chalet is located just north of Lutsen, in a beautifully wooded area of Minnesota’s Sawtooth Mountains.
My favorite part of this North Shore vacation rental is the wall of windows that looks out from the living room into the forest. Just imagine waking up and drinking your coffee there every morning. Magical!
If you’re hoping to ski or hike during your visit, this is the perfect place to stay because it’s just a short drive to Lutsen Mountain and some of the shore’s state parks.
“It’s been days since we checked out, and I’m still dreaming about this place. The heated radiant floors were Heaven on Earth. Beautiful location to see the stars at night.”
Julie — Vrbo Review
And if you’re just wanting to escape from the everyday and spend time at the cabin, the downstairs area has a pool table, a big-screen TV, and a patio that leads to a firepit.
One of the most unique (and my favorite) features is that every room has in-floor heat, so you don’t have to wake up and step on a cold floor. What a dream.
Up to 8 people can sleep comfortably in this North Shore cabin, and the home is definitely spacious enough to house that many people. Especially with the many living areas and large kitchen.
10. Unique Skyhouse
🛌 Bedrooms: 2 rooms, 2 Beds | 🛁 Bathrooms: 2 | 📍 Location: Grand Marais
If you love staying in unique homes when you travel, then you’re going to love a stay at The Skyhouse in Grand Marais. There’s really nothing like it.
The unique home has won awards around the globe and has been featured in many publications, thanks to its interesting look.
With a stay here, you’ll still be close to the best things to do, since it’s located right in Grand Marais. Restaurants and shops are within walking distance.
“My family and I wanted take a trip up the North Shore and we were lucky enough to find this gem on VRBO. The house was cozy and perfectly situated in the middle of town with great views of the harbor and close proximity to the stores and restaurants.”

My favorite feature of the home is the balcony on the top floor. From here, you can see Lake Superior and the rest of Grand Marais. It’s beautiful!
Imagine yourself bringing your morning cup of coffee out on that balcony and enjoying the beautiful views of Lake Superior. Such a relaxing way to start the day.
There are 2 bedrooms in this home and although you can sleep up to 6 people, it’s better suited for 4 since it is a pretty small space.
11. Secluded Home on Lake Superior’s Shore
🛌 Bedrooms: 3 rooms, 5 Beds | 🛁 Bathrooms: 1 | 📍 Location: Hovland
The Tamarack House, in Hovland, is tucked away in the woods, making for the perfect private getaway near Grand Marais.
This is one of the furthest north places to stay on the North Shore that I’ve included since it’s between Grand Marais and Grand Portage.
I love that this home is tucked away in the woods and is just steps from the shore of Lake Superior. Spending time relaxing out on the private beach is a must.
“We had a great time while staying at Tamarack House. It was quiet and peaceful and was wonderful being right on the lake. Would recommend to anyone.”
Sam — (Read more reviews)
The private beach near the home features as a fire pit for toasting marshmallows, which is one of my favorite ways to unwind.
Judge C. R. Magney State Park and Grand Portage State Park are both within 30 minutes of this house, making it the perfect home base for exploring during the day.
The home can comfortably sleep up to 10 people, so it’s great for a family or friend gathering since there’s plenty of space for a larger group.
Tips for Booking a Stay on the North Shore, MN
The North Shore is one of Minnesota’s top attractions, especially for visitors in the peak months of June, July, and August.
It’s important to consider a few things when planning your stay on the North Shore, MN.
When Should I Visit the North Shore?
Minnesota’s North Shore is just stunning any time of the year. But, it’s true that there is a best time to visit to ensure you have a great visit.
If you’re in search of the best weather, then visiting in summer is your best bet. You’ll have great weather, with highs in the 80s and sun almost all the time.
Fall on the North Shore is also part of peak season because of the fall foliage. It’s beautiful during this time with cool weather, so it’s more comfortable.
But, there are a few downsides of visiting in peak season. Crowds will be much larger and you might have a harder time finding a place to book, especially in peak fall season.
If you don’t mind cooler weather, visit during winter when there are fewer crowds. Plus, you can enjoy the shore’s winter activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.
