I’ve lived in Minnesota for my entire life, so I know a thing or two about the weather and the best seasons here!

There can be a lot to consider when planning your trip, so in this post, I’ll be covering everything that you need to know to plan a great trip to Minnesota.

When is the Best Time to Visit Minnesota?

One of the best parts about Minnesota is that you get to experience all four seasons, and sometimes, in just one day.

You can visit Minnesota any time of year and have a great time, but overall, summer and fall are the best seasons of the year.

The summer months are filled with warm weather, sunshine, and endless opportunities to explore the outdoors.

Once fall comes around, the leaves change colors to beautiful shades of orange, red, and yellow and fill the trees with magic.

I really love fall, because it showcases my home state’s stunning fall foliage.

Summer

Summer in Minnesota starts in June and typically goes until the end of August.

Minnesota summers are usually filled with warm, sunny days, with just occasional rainy days in between.

The average temperature during summer is 75° F to 80° F, which is the perfect temperature for most outdoor activities.

Humidity can play a huge part in Minnesota’s temperatures, especially in July and August.

Fall

Fall in Minnesota is one of the most magical times of the year, with the changing leaves and cooler temperatures.

September and October are typical fall months, but, the changing leaves don’t last long!

Usually, they are at their peak during the first two weeks of October, and then they begin to drop. But Minnesota in October is fantastic, because of these colors.

The average temperature hovers around 50° F to 60° F.

Lower or higher temperatures might occur, but they aren’t as likely.

There isn’t much rain during the Minnesota fall season. The air starts to get drier and leaves begin to fall off of the trees.

When is the Worst Time to Visit Minnesota?

I wouldn’t say there’s a bad time to visit Minnesota, because there are so many awesome things to do year-round, but there are definitely more optimal times to visit.

In the grand scheme of things, winter is most likely to be voted as the worst time to visit Minnesota.

Because of the cold weather and seemingly endless amounts of snow, many people avoid Minnesota after fall has concluded.

But, if you’re into winter sports like skiing and snowmobiling, then you’ll surely be in heaven here.

The final season here is spring, which we really don’t see much of because winter tends to take it over.

Winter

Even people that have never visited Minnesota have an understanding of how cold it can get during the winter months.

The cold weather is what we are most known for!

November through March is typically considered the winter months in Minnesota.

They are characterized by cold temperatures and lots of snow.

The average temperature is around 20° F, but you will often see days that fall below 0° F, and the wind chill can make the temperature feel colder than it actually is.

Minnesota gets an average of about 50 inches of snowfall per year, which just adds to the cold weather.

Spring

The winter season in Minnesota is long, and almost entirely takes over spring.

But, we are usually lucky enough to see about one month of spring before summer hits.

One of the best reasons to visit Minnesota in spring is to see the pink flowers on the trees.

Spring in Minnesota usually happens between April and May, but it can vary each year, depending on how long winter lasts.

The temperatures in May fall between 50° F and 70° F with many days filled with rain.
