One of those things, that concerns many people is whether or not the state of Minnesota has tornadoes or not.
I was born and raised in Minnesota and have had my fair share of experiences with Minnesota’s weather and sometimes unpredictable disasters.

Does Minnesota Have Tornadoes?
The quick answer to this is yes, Minnesota does experience tornadoes, although they don’t happen as often as they do elsewhere.
During the summer months, we tend to have tornadoes scattered throughout the season, with some of them being destructive.
The frequency and intensity of these tornadoes do really vary based on the year and time of year that they happen.
Tornadoes are caused by a change in wind direction and become the most dangerous when they touch the ground, according to the National Weather Service.
Minnesota often has tornadoes that touch down, but they typically only last for a few minutes before ending.
Where you are in the state and what the weather is like in that region will dictate whether or not a tornado will take place there.
Are Tornadoes Common in Minnesota?
While we aren’t technically located in Tornado Alley, we do have tornadoes in Minnesota throughout the year.
Most of them happen in either June or July and follow a pretty rough thunderstorm.
Tornadoes can be common in Minnesota, and they can be dangerous and deadly, depending on their intensity.
Tornadoes aren’t as common here in Minnesota as they are in places like Kansas and Missouri, but they are common throughout the summer.
In previous years, there have been months where there were 30-50 tornadoes in a single month throughout the state.
Most of these also occur in tornado outbreaks where tornadoes occur on and off for anywhere from 3 to 12 hours, according to the MN DNR.
However, in the almost 23 years that I’ve lived in Minnesota, I personally haven’t ever seen a tornado, but I have seen the destruction that they can do.
Where I live in Northern Minnesota, we have tornadoes maybe one or two times a summer and they typically do damage to a 1-5 square mile area of land.
Aside from that area, the rest of the surrounding space is typically hit with a pretty nasty thunderstorm that has damaging strong winds.
But, that’s just my personal experience with tornadoes, and many of them in the state have turned very dangerous and even deadly.
When is Tornado Season in Minnesota?
There is no official ‘tornado season’ here in Minnesota since they can really happen any time of year (except for the dead of winter).
But you will see most of them taking place during the summer. In fact, over 3/4 of Minnesota’s tornadoes take place in June, July, and August.
Tornadoes have taken place in every month from March to December, but they’ve never been known to take place in January or February.
Before 2021, the latest they had ever happened was mid-November, but on December 15th, 2021, there was a tornado in Southern Minnesota near the Twin Cities.
It’s best to be prepared for them anytime, but really be prepared from June until August.
Is Minnesota in Tornado Alley?
No, Minnesota is not in tornado alley. It’s actually located right on the northern edge of Tornado Alley.
Tornado Alley is a region of the United States where tornadoes happen the most frequently and there is a high possibility of tornadoes developing.
This area includes Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and as well as parts of South Dakota, Iowa, Louisiana, Colorado, and Texas.
Unfortunately, this area sees the most destruction and has some of the most destructive tornadoes in the world.
According to World Population Review, the most tornadoes throughout the year happen in Texas and Kansas.
So now we know why The Wizard of Oz was based in the state of Kansas!
How Many Tornadoes Does Minnesota Have a Year?
The question does Minnesota have tornadoes can be quite concerning for many, and you may be wondering how many does the state have per year based on tornado statistics.
This number varies by year, but on average, there are typically around 30 to 50 tornadoes per year, with some years having more and others less.
The year with the most tornadoes was back in 2010, when there were 48 tornadoes within a 6-hour period. This same month, there ended up being a total of 71 tornadoes.
Are Tornadoes Dangerous In Minnesota?
Yes, tornadoes can be dangerous no matter where they’re at, and it’s very important to be prepared for them.
Minnesota has had many deadly and dangerous tornadoes in its history, with the first recorded tornado taking place in 1820.
Back in 2020, there was a tornado in Grant and Otter Tail Counties, where there was an EF-4 tornado that had one dead and 2 injured.
This was the most recent known tornado to be deadly here.
The deadliest in Minnesota tornado history was way back in 1886 when 72 people died and 213 were injured in St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids.
So just because we aren’t located right in Tornado Alley, doesn’t mean that we should be any less cautious of these powerful storms.
Luckily, though, Minnesota rarely has EF5 tornadoes, which are the most dangerous on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
What Was the Worst Tornado in Minnesota?
There have been quite a few deadly, dangerous, and scary tornadoes in the state of Minnesota.
The worst one in Minnesota tornado history was back in 1886. This tornado was deadly and had 72 people dead with 213 injured in the St. Cloud area.
The next was in June of 1919 near Fergus Falls, where 57 were dead and 200 injured.
On the other hand, the year with the most tornadoes was 2010, when there were 71 tornadoes in that year, with 48 of them occurring in June within a 6-hour timeframe.
Safety Tips for Minnesota Tornadoes

Understanding how to react and what to do in a tornado is very important. Here are just a few tips for keeping yourself safe.
- Understand Tornado Watches vs Tornado Warnings: These two are different. A tornado watch is there is just a chance for tornadoes because the weather is favorable for them. A tornado warning is when a tornado has been detected and you should take shelter.
- Monitor the Local News: Always pay attention to the local news and radar for tornado watches or warnings and for when it’s safe to come out of the shelter.
- Find a Safe Room in a Sturdy Building: The safest place to be is in a sturdy building, in a room with no windows, and as low as you can.
- Stay Away From Windows and Doors: Windows and doors put you at greater risk as they can break and cause more damage. So stay away from them and the outdoors.
- Get Low: In whatever sturdy building you’re in, it’s best to get as low as you can. They offer the most shelter.
- Have a Safety Kit: Ensure you have what you need to last for a few days. Have a kit with at least two weeks worth of supplies including batteries for devices, a first-aid kit, laminated insurance cards, food, water, and medicine.
